Embodied carbon in technical installations

About

A life cycle assessment of a refurbished building in Norway

Embodied emissions, generated during production, transportation, installation, and maintenance of building materials, are gaining attention as operational emissions decline due to improved energy efficiency. This shift has made life cycle assessments (LCA) a crucial tool in evaluating environmental performance. However, LCAs often exclude technical installations, despite their significant carbon footprint and use of resource-intensive materials. This omission can lead to a significant underestimation of a building’s total life cycle emissions. This study evaluates the carbon footprint of technical installations of a case study building, aiming to improve the accuracy of LCAs and support more sustainable building design.
