The controlled manipulation of emergent monopole charges in dipolar-coupled nanomagnetic systems—collectively known as
artificial spin ice (ASI)—remains a central challenge. While global magnetic fields offer a simple means of driving monopole motion,
they typically induce uncontrolled avalanche-like switching, erasing encoded information and limiting device reliability. Achieving
deterministic, stepwise monopole propagation is therefore highly desirable for ASI-based information computing and reconfigurable
magnonics. In this work, we demonstrate robust, reconfigurable control of monopole propagation in square ASI using an astroid-
clocking protocol. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) imaging, supported by
numerical simulations, reveal reliable single-step monopole motion, access to a large number of ASI microstates, and dynamic
control over distinct monopole trajectories. Our approach enables deterministic monopole control
using global fields and demonstrates a versatile pathway toward functional ASI-based devices for data storage, magnetricity, and
unconventional computing.
