Faglig innhold

Hydration and microstructure characterization of cementitious materials. Experimental techniques and data interpretation. Sample preparation. Hydration and phase changes. Ternary diagrams.

Læringsutbytte

The course should provide the students with an understanding of the typically used techniques for microstructure characterization of cementitious material and ability to interpret data. Knowledge- Detailed understanding of the physical principles of often used techniques for microstructure characterization of cementitious materials (TGA, XRD, SEM-EDS, calorimetry, chemical shrinkage measurement) - Understanding of the principles of various porosity characterisation methods - Basic knowledge on sample preparation- Basic knowledge on the possibilities to predict kind and amount of phases: ternary diagrams, mass balance calculations and short introduction to thermodynamic modelling - Awareness of errors and accuracySkills- Ability to select appropriate techniques for microstructure characterization of cementitious materials, considering limitations and pitfalls- Ability to interpret TGA, XRD, calorimetry, and chemical shrinkage measurements- Ability to predict kind and amount of phases using ternary diagrams and mass balance calculations General competence: - Ability to reflect and argue on a scientific basis - Ability to use theoretical considerations for interpretation of experimental data.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

One-week intensive course. Lectures and exercises including presentations by participants. Reading and preparation of poster before course. A short written report applying the acquired knowledge and skills to own research. The lectures, exercises and reporting are in English. To pass the course 80 percent course participation and a score of at least 70 percent is required. A fee covering lecture material, meals etc. will be applied. At the end of the course the students will deliver a short written report applying the acquired knowledge and skills to own research.
