VAEJOVIDAE
Thorell, 1876

This is a large family with 23 genera and 190 species [Updated 29.04.14]. This family includes only species from North America (Southwestern Canada, the United States and Mexico) and Central America (Guatemala). Vaejovids are found in nearly every habitat, up to the Alpine tree-line (over 3,000 meters), though most are found in arid (to 70 m below sea level) and semi-arid habitats. Some species experience "winter-like conditions", and are cold adapted. Several species in the genus Pseudouroctonus are cave-dwelling troglophiles.

Several members of this family have been reported to occur frequently in captivity.

Many species of this family can deliver very painful stings, but they are not belived to be dangerous to healthy humans.

The genus Uroctonus has been transfered to the family Chactidae by Soleglad & Fet, 2003.

August 2005: A new genus Franckeus is described by Soleglad & Fet, and five species are transfered from the genus Vaejovis (+ one new species is described).

May 2006: A new genus Stahnkeus is described by Soleglad & Fet, and five species are transfered from the genus Serradigitus.

August 2007: A new genus Gertschius is described by Graham & Soleglad with one new species, and one species is transfered from the genus Serradigitus.

July 2008: Soleglad & Fet has published several changes. See Vaejovidae Updates for details.

November 2013: Gonzalez-Santillan & Prendini have published a revision of the subfamily Syntropinae Kraepelin, 1905. Article can be found here.

SPECIES FILES:
This list of genera and species is based on Fet et al.(2000). Subspecies are not included in the list. I try to update the list as additions and changes are published. * denotes changes after Fet et al. (2000). I will be grateful for information about new development in the taxonomy of this family. For information about synonyms and bibliographies, see Fet et al. (2000)
