Between Shortcut and Learning Path: What Happens When AI Moves into the Classroom?
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly become an integral part of students’ learning environments. Tools such as ChatGPT provide new opportunities for support, inspiration, and efficiency, while simultaneously challenging established norms of independent work, assessment, and academic integrity. This article discusses how AI can be employed as a learning tool rather than a shortcut in higher education. Drawing on examples from teaching practice and student experiences, it explores how AI can promote reflection, critical thinking, and metacognitive awareness when used deliberately and with clear pedagogical grounding. At the same time, the article highlights the need to develop new forms of assessment, digital guidelines, and ethical frameworks that safeguard both learning and integrity. The aim is to contribute to a renewed understanding of AI as a collaborative partner in learning rather than a threat to it.
