Author Guidelines

Guidelines for Research Articles

• Articles shall have a clear focus that relates to the aims and scope of Dance Articulated as stated above.
• Languages that can be used are English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
• Upon submission the author should submit:

- The article in full format, inclusive of reference list, maximum 7000 words. A figure counts as 200 words. 

- A short abstract of maximum 200 words in the language used in the article + a short abstract of 200 words in English if the language of the article is Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.

- A separate page with name of the author + a biography of 100 words in English, and in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish if that is the language used in the article.

Formatting

• European standard paper size, A4 210 x 297 mm.
• Times New Roman size 12.
• 1,5 line spacing in all parts of the text, including qutations and reference list.
• Separate sections within the text with indent
• Never use big letters in titles.
• Never use underlining in any parts of the text.
• Divide the text with the use of subtitles that propel the text forwards.
• If you need one more level of subtitles, make these cursive, not bold.
• Use Times New Roman size 14, bold, on main title. Use Times New Roman size 12, bold, on subtitles. Use Times New Roman size 12, cursive not bold, on next level of subtitles (if this level is needed). Like this:

• Put the author name below the main title with one line spacing (press space key once). After the author name, press space key twice before start of the main text.
• Press the space key once before and after each new subtitle
• Format titles of books, journals and art work with cursive.
• Use 1cm margin on each side.
• Mark page number in the lower right corner.

Photos and Illustrations:

• Use only photos and illustrations that you are permitted to use by the copyright holders. Authors are responsible for the use of photos/illustrations.
• The copyright must obey to creative commons licence CC-BY 4.0
• Accredit photographer/artist, name of performance and of dancers/actors.
• Mark where the photos/illustrations should be included in the text, and attach them as separate digital attachments (JPG, TIFF, PNG), all with minimum 300 dpi resolution.
• Links to video material in the article text are welcome.

References:

• Use the APA 7^thmanual https://apastyle.apa.org for references in the text and for the reference list.
• Use an author’s first name the first time s/he is referred to within the actual text. Do not use an author’s first name if a reference is referred to only in parenthesis.
• Do not use endnotes but footnotes. Use the automatic footnote system in the word program. Endotes should be used to a minimal extent, and no meaning-bearing content should be included in endnotes.
• Direct quotes less than 40 words should be written into the current text and marked with quotation marks.
• Direct quotes longer than 40 words should be marked as an own paragraph with indentation. Use the tab key twice and use Times New Roman size 10. Do not use quotation mark nor cursive text.
• If choreographers, companies and art works are mentioned in the text, these should be included in the reference list

Research ethical guidelines

All articles under consideration for publication in Dance Articulated must follow accepted ethical guidelines, including consent from everybody participating in the research. 

The Vancouver rules must be followed for co-authorship.

Journal Artificial Intelligence Policy

Dance Articulated recognises that generative AI tools are increasingly used in research and writing practices, including within artistic, arts-based, practice-based and educational research. Used reflectively and transparently, such tools may support scholarly work.

For articles in Dance Articulated, AI based tools (including large language models and other generative systems) may not be listed as authors or co‑authors, as authorship entails responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, originality, and ethical conduct of the work.

Manuscripts may make use of AI‑assisted tools as part of the research or writing process. Examples are: for language support, translation, or assistance with structuring of the text. When AI tools are used in this way, the authors are responsible for the content produced and must acknowledge the use of AI at relevant points in the manuscript. If AI is used for analysis, this must be described in the method section of the article.

AI‑generated content should not be cited as a scholarly source. Authors are expected to ensure that all sources are traceable and that the use of AI does not compromise academic integrity, ethical standards, or the handling of sensitive data.

All articles must include an AI declaration as an Appendix, describing that AI was not used in thos article, or how it was used. 

Dance Articulated encourages critical reflection on the methodological, ethical, and human implications of AI assisted research practices, in line with the journal’s commitment to responsible and transparent scholarship.

Article Processing Charge

Dance Articulated charges an article processing charge (APC) of 5,000 NOK for peer-reviewed articles. The APC is requested only after an article has been accepted for publication.

The APC is used exclusively to cover costs that cannot be carried out by the editorial team, which is professional language proofreading and article layout/design. DA's long-time proof-reader is John Shepherd based in Finland. The layout and design of the articles are made by the small artist driven design business Trine+Kim in Norway.  

Dance Articulated is published as Gold open access standard (CC-BY 4.0), is freely available to read and download, and operates outside commercial academic publishing structures. Neither the editorial board nor NTNU’s Open Journal Systems platform takes out profit from the APC.

Fee waivers
Authors without an affiliation to a research institution that can support the APC may apply for a full or partial fee waiver. Requests for waivers must be submitted at the time of submission. The corresponding author should include a letter of request stating:

• institutional affiliation
• type of waiver requested (partial or full)

Information about APC payment and waiver requests is not shared with reviewers, and financial considerations have no influence on editorial or peer-review decisions.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Copyright Notice

Authors contributing to Dance Articulated retain the copyright of their article but agree to publish their articles under the terms of the Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). This allows third parties to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, and to remix, transform, and build upon the material, for any purpose, even commercially, under the condition that appropriate credit is given, that a link to the license is provided, and that the third party indicates if changes were made. Third parties may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses the third party or its use.

Dance Articulated allows the author(s) to hold copyright and retain publishing rights without restrictions.

Authors must sign a copyright agreement before publication.
