Author Guidelines

Instructions for authors - Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics 

You may email the editors if you have questions (redaksjon_eip@hf.ntnu.no) but submissions must be sent through the link above to register your information and register your consent and confirmations. All submissions are checked for plagiarism using NTNU plagiarism control.  We do not charge Article Processing Charge for submission and review. 

Questions About Article Processing Charge (APC)

This policy applies ONLY to authors whose papers have already been accepted for publication. APC does not apply at the submission and review stage so we appreciate if no query on APC is submitted until your submission is accepted. Once your submission is accepted for publication, we will then inform you about the details, including eligibility for APC waiver, if applicable, and as funds allow.

Editorial Procedure

Articles that are found promising will be subjected to review by independent expert peers (double-blind refereeing). The author will normally receive response within two months. When the article has been accepted for publication, it is subjected to copyediting, whereupon it is returned to the author for proofreading. The article is then set, and set draft is sent to the author for final approval (in this last round a 48 hour deadline applies, and only minor changes, e.g. typographical and formatting errors, are accepted at this stage).

Formal requirements

If contributions are submitted via OJS (this online platform), it should be in the prescribed format (preferably Microsoft Word). The author’s full name, professional position, institutional affiliation and email-address must be given in the accompanying Letter to Editors. The Letter can include suggestions for impartial and external referees whom the author finds suitable.

Article length shall normally be 3000 to 8000 words. All contributions must be made anonymous, that is, all authors must ensure that any references to their own works or other statements identifying the author directly or indirectly are avoided or replaced by the reference ’xxx’. The responsibility for inserting this information after the expert peer review rests upon the author. The author is responsible for procuring permission to use illustrations and other materials. Figures and pictures must be of adequate resolution and format – preferably EPS or TIF, with a minimum of 200 dpi. Pictures of lower quality may be used in the initial document provided that higher quality versions can be produced if the article is accepted for publication.

Language, abstract, keywords and author details

The journal accepts manuscripts written in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and English. The first page of the manuscript must contain the full title, an abstract of up to 250 words, and a maximum of five key words.
     Author details and affiliation are submitted separately but are included in the copyedit ready version when and if the submission is accepted for publication. Degrees and titles (e.g. Dr., Ph.D.) are, as matter of style, not included in the name of author/s on the first page but are indicated in the issue biographical list of contributors and the article Indexing Metadata available to readers.   

Style guide

Etikk i praksis – Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics follows the APA style. For examples, see citations and list of references in the most recent published articles in the Archives or set your citation management software (e.g. EndNote) to APA 7th. For legal documents, citation examples listed on http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/legal/ should be followed. In addition, the following specifications apply:
  • Submitted papers should use the Times New Roman font, 12 point for the body text, with 1.5 spacing. Use indentation or a blank line (choose one) to indicate a new paragraph.
  • Avoid numbered headlines. Use bold 14 point type for first level headings, and italicised 12 point type for second level headings.
  • Leave the right hand margin uneven. Do not use manual hyphenation or page shift.
  • The number and length of notes should be kept to a minimum. Notes should be placed at the end of the document (endnotes).
  • For in-text citations, give the surname of the author and the year of publication. As a general rule, page references should be supplied after year of publication, separated by a colon. For example (Luhmann 1992: 16–20).
  • Do not use abbreviations such as ibid., op.cit., loc.cit., idem, or et passim.
  • Quotations must be indicated by quotation marks. Quotations that are longer than three lines must be organised as separate paragraphs using 10 point font, single spacing and an 0.5 cm indentation from the left hand margin. Use single quotation marks for a quotation enclosed inside another quotation. Use square brackets to indicate any shortening of a quotation: […]
  • Distinguish between the dash and the hyphen. In order to emphasise words, please italicise – do not underline or use bold type.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text uses 1.5 spacing; uses a 12-point font (Times New Roman); employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.

Ensuring blind review 

For articles submitted to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the identity of the author(s) must be withheld, as this journal adheres to a ‘double blind’ peer-review process.

To ensure anonymity, the name(s) of the author(s) must be deleted from the manuscript’s text and file properties, and the submitting author must upload a separate file with a title page that includes author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s). Please follow these instructions:

  1. The title page must be uploaded separately from the manuscript, as an additional file, during the submission process.
  2. Check that the text of your manuscript is also blinded; that is to say, any references within the manuscript which might reveal you to be the author are removed. This means that there should only be few (if any) references to your own publications (in the text as well as in the reference list).
  3. If you as an author are very easily recognizable based on the project you are describing, the project should also be anonymized.
  4. Author identification must also be removed from the properties for the file, especially the file name. Instructions for deleting names from file properties in Word can be found here: Support Microsoft Office.

Intervju - Interview

Interview (intervju) articles do not undergo double-blind peer review but are instead reviewed by editors and approved by interviewees.
