STARFiSh is an open-source Python software framework for one-dimensional blood flow simulation in mammalian vascular networks.

The software provides tools for creating and editing vascular networks, defining a wide range of vessel models and boundary conditions, and simulating blood flow throughout the cardiovascular system.

A distinctive feature of STARFiSh is the integrated support for:

  • uncertainty quantification
  • sensitivity analysis
  • wave separation analysis

making it particularly well suited for cardiovascular research and digital twin applications.

Developed over many years for cardiovascular research, STARFiSh is now being modernized through an ongoing migration to Python 3, ensuring compatibility with modern scientific Python environments while preserving the validated modelling framework. Development continues actively, with ongoing maintenance, modernization of the code base and implementation of new functionality by the Cardiovascular Biomechanics group at NTNU and collaborators.
