NTNU is introducing a new Rights Retention Strategy – RRS which ensures Open Access to all new scientific articles published by NTNU’s researchers – from day one!

The new Rights Retention Strategy takes effect on 1 October 2022.
The new scheme will ensure that new scientific articles that end up behind a paywall can immediately be made openly available
by NTNU’s researchers when they self-archive the latest version of the Author Accepted Manuscript in the NTNU Open repository.
A similar scheme has also been introduced at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway as well as several institutions in Europe and the USA.
All knowledge available
In Khrono on 14 August 2022 (in Norwegian), Pro-Rector for Research Tor Grande (photo on top) says:
– For NTNU, it is an important principle that all knowledge is made available to everyone. For the individual researchers, this will mean that they reach out to more people.
In Khrono, NTNU’s Chief Librarian Sigurd Eriksson also says:
– With our strategy, researchers can publish wherever they want, and the strategy also enables open access to research that is published in closed journals.
Responsibility and rights
With the new scheme, open access to an article can be provided without delay and without informing the publisher.
Since NTNU takes on the legal responsibility for the scheme, individual researcher does not need to worry that archiving their work might violate the agreement signed with the publisher.
Researchers also keep the rights to use and disseminate text and other material they have produced themselves.
It will be possible to request an exemption from making individual articles available immediately.
Open Access
With the scheme, NTNU wants to contribute to the national objective of open access to outputs from publicly funded research by 2024.
To achieve the goal, it is important that employees at NTNU, regardless of whether they are corresponding author or co-author, always self-archive their article in NTNU Open as soon as soon as it is published, in accordance with NTNU’s Guidelines for Policy for Open Science.
