2.Different locations of windows of varying size and number create varying impressions of the room`s dimensions.
![]() Room A
A. Comparing the two congruent spaces A and B, A seems to be lower than B. The horizontal window and the large, low bed are both factors giving the room an atmosphere of rest. It is probable that room A will be chosen as the most inviting for sleep.
![]() Room B
B. The effect of a vertical or horizontal partition of a wall is relative. Used as a single element or opening, the vertical part may give the impression of greater height in a space as demonstrated here (see also room C and F below). However, being a part of a continuous sequence of elements the effect is the opposite (see Interplay of light). Here the vertical wall elements form a horizontal row. According to the Gestalt law of equality similar elements are grouped mentally.
![]() Room C
C. The space is characterized by the use of contrasting means and asymmetry. The dominance of horizontal effects is balanced by the vertical element in the background. This limits and opens the room into a spatial dialogue in which the long low window plays an active part. As in room A we conceive a mood of tranquillity.
![]()
D. The square opening reduces the impression of height.
![]()
E. The horizontal opening reduces the impression of the entity being tall and narrow.
![]()
F. The vertical opening accentuates the narrow character of the space. Compared with D and E this room appears to be highest. |
