International workshop on managing
uncertainty in energy networks
This workshop held at Oppdal in March included
researchers from among others Norway, USA, Ger-
many, France, Belgium and Italy. Around 40 re-
searchers met for three days to share ideas about
market design, infrastructure investments and en-
ergy system analysis
Keynote speakers were Yves Smeers from Univer-
sité Catholique de Louvain and Steven Gabriel from
University of Maryland. In total 25 presentations
were given. Examples of topics were:
- Risk adjusted discounted cash flows in capacity
expansion models (Yves Smeers)
- A New Method for MPECs with a Natural Gas Ap-
plication (Steven A. Gabriel)
- The value of energy storage in domestic homes: A
smart grid perspective (Stein W. Wallace)
- Stochastic Programming for Electricity Spot Auc-
tion Bidding (Daniel Haugstvedt)
In addition to hard scientific work on energy mod-
elling there were some time set aside for network-
ing and social activities , including vistis to the local
ski slopes and Oppdal Museum.

Cooperation with Shanghai Jiao Tong Uni-
versity
CenSES is actively involved in NTNU’s Joint Research
Centre (JRC) on energy with Shanghai Jiao Tong
University (SJTU). As part of this activity, Marius
Korsnes has been employed as a PhD candidate to
study the development of industry and technology
for offshore wind in China, with a particular focus on
Norwegian presence in this market.
Furthermore, CenSES had three representatives at
the JRC workshop in Shanghai in June 2012. At this
workshop it was decided that CenSES in cooperation
with professors and researchers at SJTU will arrange
a summer course called ‘Energy, Environment and
Society’ designed to provide engineering students
at SJTU with a state-of-the-art introduction to social
science perspectives on topics related to energy
production and consumption, such as green inno-
vation and technological development, the role of
politics and frameworks, and public perception and
user perspectives. The course was approved by the
SJTU board and will thus be arranged in the period
24 June - 15 July, 2013.
