Bothriuridae
Simon, 1880

This family includes 14 genera and 104 species [Updated 09.05.03]. The family has representatives in South America, Africa (southern part), Asia (India) and Australia, where they are found in temperate and subtropical habitats. One genus has recently been discovered in the Himalayas (Cercophonius). Members of this family are found in small burrows, under stones, in cracks and crevices, and in self-made burrows up to 40 cm deep.

Members of this family are unique in that the normally pentagonal sternum consists of two transverse bars (except Lisposoma and Tehuankea), and is several times broader than long.

The genera Brandbergia and Liposoma are distributed in Southern Africa.

There are no medical publications available that indicate that this family has species of medical importance, but Mahsberg, et al. (1999) say that the sting from the genus Bothriurus is painful and may cause cardiovascular symptoms.

Members of this family are rarely reported in captivity.

SPECIES FILES:
This list of genera and species is based on Fet et al.(2000). Subspecies are not included in the list. I try to update the list as additions and changes are published. I will be grateful for information about new development in the taxonomy of this family. For information about synonyms and bibliographies, see Fet et al. (2000)
