Sustainable Energy Transitions at
RERC 2012
600 participants from 36 nations shared green tech-
nological possibilities at the 2nd Renewable Energy
Research Conference (RERC) that took place during
‘Technoport 2012 – Sharing Possibilities’ in Trond-
heim 16 - 18 April. CenSES and RA1 contributed to
and arranged a session on ”The role of technology
and engineering in sustainable energy transitions:
Social science perspectives”. Two distinguished
speakers were invited to talk about transition man-
agement and strategies, Frank Geels, from the SPRU
centre (Science and Technology Policy Research)
who is one of the founders of this theoretical strand
and Ulrik Jørgensen from Denmark Technical Uni-
versity, who has been criticizing this perspective.
Seminar on policy tools
On 12 - 13 March RA1 arranged a seminar on energy
policy tools with 30 participants from research and
user partners in CenSES. The aim of the seminar was
to discuss the research area based on presentations
from researchers in CenSES. Different types of tools,
from market to non-market based, were presented
and discussed. The policy tools were discussed in
relation to how households and central professions
like architects, engineers and economists under-
stand and approach them. The status of political
analysis in energy and environment studies and
ways of reconciling environment and energy politi-
cal interests in renewable energy were other impor-
tant issues presented and discussed. 10 researchers
presented and user partners like Enova, Innovasjon
Norge, Statnett and Transnova did contribute with
very valuable comments in the discussion.
