The Master’s Thesis consists of a theoretical or empirical investigation on a subject chosen within the above described enlarged definition of Human Development, preferably related to one or several of the specializations studied in PSY3083 and SANT3506. The student should contact teachers at the Master’s program for advice on choice of subject.
Supervision is an important part of the work with the Master’s Thesis. It will ensure that the student is acquiring relevant knowledge and guarantee high standards in collection and analysis of data. It will also ensure that it follows the guidelines for research ethics. Supervision is therefore a compulsory for every student that wishes to submit a Master’s Thesis. The subject for the Master’s Thesis will have to be approved by the Department of Psychology, which also appoints a supervisor. The Department will announce deadlines for applications for approval of subject and appointment of supervisor. The main office of the Department provides application form.

There are specific rules for how a Master’s Thesis should be written, as well as criteria for grading a thesis. The Department provides these on request.

Examination in PSY3904 is passed in the last semester of the programme and the student register for the exam on a specific form provided by the Department, in addition to regular exam registration. The Master’s Thesis is submitted in six copies.

After having completed the Master’s Thesis the student should have acquired ability to (1) carry out a scientific research project, (2) think in a principled and logical way, (3) work independently, (4) carry out a large project within a predefined time frame.
