Faglig innhold

This two day course will introduce PhD students and interested others to the methodology and method of autoethnography. After introductions, it will proceed according to the sequence of its learning objectives, as also described in the program below. Autoethnography will be comprehensively described and discussed in the context of qualitative inquiry more generally, and in relation to ontoepistemological, theoretical, political and methodological issues. The discussion will then turn to important concerns around subjectivity, voice, writing-performing, and evaluating and disseminating autoethnographic work. Following an illustrated consideration of ethical challenges, the course will end with a focus on participants’ possible use of autoethnography in their own disciplines. (Prior to the course, participants are strongly encouraged to selectively read some of Grant’s exemplar autoethnographies and the introductory reading listed in the suggested reading list below).


By the end of the course, students will be able to • Understand the main characteristics of autoethnography, as methodology and method. • Describe its range of philosophical, theoretical, political and methodological governing assumptions and principles. • Consider how their own professional and personal experiences, and ‘epiphanies’, could be used in beginning single authored or relational, collaborative autoethnographies. • Understand the arguments for regarding subjectivity as a resource more than a hindrance in autoethnographic and, more widely, social and human inquiry. • Evaluate critical challenges to the neutral ‘voice’. • Understand the preparation and effort that needs to go into writing and performing autoethnography. • Appreciate the opportunities and constraints around the dissemination of autoethnographic work. • Anticipate the kinds of ethical challenges in conducting and disseminating autoethnographic writing, and the ways to engage with these challenges. • Assess the applicability and opportunities for the use of autoethnography to enhance and advance knowledge and practice in counseling, education, therapy and organizational development.
