Om emnet
Faglig innhold
The intention of the course is to introduce the student to the use of molecular genetic methods in the detection and characterisation of microoganisms. Methods for extraction methods, qualitative and quantitative PCR methods and DNA sequencing will be presented. The students will also be introduced to the principles for primer and probe design. The use of databases will be the subject of lectures, and the use of databases aiming at establishing molecular genetic assays. The application of genotypic assays for the purpose of molecular epidemiology will be discussed and demonstrated.
Læringsutbytte
The student will be introduced to the use of molecular genetic methods in the detection, identification and quantification of different microorganisms. Use of such methods in the analysis of phenotypic properties exemplified by antibiotic resistance in bacteria and its use in molecular epidemiology will be demonstrated. It will also be focus on making the student familiar with the use of databases.
