JOHN DELANEY is an American oceanographer at the University of Washington who developed a 575-mile cabled network on the Juan de Fuca plate in the Pacific Ocean that allows us to understand the Earth’s “inner space.” It provides power and two-way, high-bandwidth communications between humans on land and instruments on the seafloor and in the water column.
