Most of our planet is ocean – it is all around us, and yet still mostly a mystery. Our maps of the Moon, Venus and Mars are more detailed than our maps of the seafloor.  As for what lives in the ocean, our knowledge is even more sketchy, though thanks to the Census of Marine Life and the powers of DNA sequencing, we now know much more than we used to.  Sadly, one thing that we have learned is that the ocean is not what it once was, and many ocean scientists today find themselves working to maintain and restore ocean health.

We need all the help we can get, including collaborations between science and the arts.  Most importantly we need to stop just writing planetary obituaries. We still have many challenges but also some important successes.  Here’s to #OceanOptimism and #EarthOptimism.
