Abstract

The well established HVDC power transmission technology is currently also seen as a viable solution for the medium-voltage range and there is a growing demand for extruded MVDC cables. The CIGRE TB 496 gives recommendations for highvoltage tests on extruded DC cable systems with rated voltage up to 500 kV, but do not consider the technical differences  between HVDC and MVDC cables. Therefore, the prequalification test described in CIGRE TB 496 is analysed and an optimised PQ test is proposed for extruded MVDC cables.
