About the Journal

Focus and scope

The Nordic Journal of Science and Technology Studies (NJSTS) is an Open Access academic journal published at NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture.

The journal has a broad interest in the interrelationship between science, technology and society and wishes to highlight research in the Nordic region. We welcome contributions on a wide range of topics related to science and technology that has been at the core of Science and Technology studies (STS) since its inception; how technology and science is made, the role of scientific and technological governance, the relationship between politics, technology and science, and user perspectives on technology and science – to mention a few. NJSTS is committed to advancing multidisciplinary studies at the intersection of social science, the humanities, and natural and technical sciences, but require that papers utilize concepts and/or theories from Science and Technology Studies (STS) - or in other ways engage with STS scholarship.

The journal provides research, analysis, and commentary from both established and emerging themes in the Nordic STS communities. Since its launch in 2013 the journal has published research on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to, sustainable energy and climate change, digitalization, RRI, citizen science, biotechnology, food, animals, video games, and security. We have also published special issues on the intersections of care, policies, and technology (Care in STS) and how the study of craft can help us (Crafting sustainability).

Research that explores themes of injustice and inclusion in science and technology is particularly welcome.

The journal is separated into three sections: peer-reviewed articles, book reviews, and opinion pieces. Submissions to all three sections are welcomed.

Peer reviewed articles are primarily empirical articles, but we are also open to more theoretical discussions and literature reviews.

Peer Review Process

All articles are double-blind peer reviewed. A submission will typically be reviewed by two qualified peers with knowledge about the relevant theory and/or empirical situation described.

Article Processing Charge (APC)

As the journal is run on a volunteer basis without a funding source, we kindly request all published authors apply to their universities/departments to cover an APC of 3200 NOK (≈324€). The APC charge is used to cover costs related to hosting, typesetting, and managing the journal. As NJSTS is a non-profit journal, no editors receive any monetary compensation. Please contact the journal’s administrator ingvild.f.fjellsa@ntnu.no for information about payment of APC charge.

Publication Frequency

NJSTS publishes one to two volumes per year, with occasional special issues.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
