Designing in Urban Natures

Designing in Urban Natures

Intro

The village is connected to ongoing research on urban natures and design for sustainability transitions at the Department of Design. We will introduce design perspectives and emphasize the participation of relevant groups along the way, such as speakers from research, policy and urban development environments. Students will choose a topic and develop their own projects within the village theme. They are encouraged to draw on knowledge and methods from their own disciplines and to interact with external partners.

Possible research questions include:
How can nature be made visible in the city?
What strategies can be developed to both welcome and bring back nature within the city?
What diverse ways can people encounter nature in the city?
How can conflict be negotiated in the city between human and nonhuman species?

Text

Nature produces substantial health, social, environmental and economic benefits. However, much urban nature remains marginalised, hidden and insecure, under increasing threat by urbanisation, climate change, and economic development. Calls to reassert nature in cities take many forms, ranging from formal nature-based solutions and ecological restoration approaches through to more obscure rewilding and guerrilla gardening practices. All approaches raise questions as to what types of nature best ‘suit’ cities and what strategies can be deployed to recognise, frame, encounter, restore, protect and co-exist with more-than-human species. This village recognises a vast diversity of urban natures including plants, weeds, birds, bugs, insects, animals, ‘water’ natures, and natures in us and others (microbes, food fermentation). A variety of disciplines intersect with urban natures, including engineering, technology, architecture, industrial design, social science, philosophy, art, design, planning, policy and health.

Relevant competency

The village is planning an interdisciplinary effort where all professional competence is relevant. Personal interest and commitment to the village’s theme is also important.
