New PhD course with credits on literature review and academic writing

A new PhD course with credits on literature review and academic writing is offered this semester to students within medicine and health sciences. The course is offered by the library and is especially relevant to students an early stage, or in the process of writing a literature review.

This semester, a new PhD course with five credits is available: MH8000 – Literature review and academic writing for PhD students in medicine and health sciences. The course is arranged by The Medicine and Health Library and consists of a four day long on-campus session (27-30. April 2020), and subsequent period of individual work, prior to a home exam in the form of a literature review.

The aim of the course is to introduce PhD students to practical transferable skills related to keeping up to date with the research field and to disseminate research through clear and effective writing. The course is a result of demand from PhD students and it will focus on elements like: Using structured literature searching to keep up with developments within the research field, using EndNote as a tool for reference management and in-text citations, practical understanding of the principles for good citation practice, and knowledge of central principles for clear and effective writing.

During the course, each student will define a curriculum consisting of research literature which will form the basis of a literature review within the subject of their own PhD project. A draft of the literature review must be delivered as a final exam. The course is limited to 18 participants and students at an early phase of their PhD, or in the process of writing a literature review, will be prioritized. All students enrolled in the PhD programme at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at NTNU can apply.
