PhD Candidate in Computing

A 4-year PhD position is available at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Science on the ONSITE project (Design Driven Field Studies for Safer Demanding Marine Operations). The project is headed by the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.
The appointment will be for 4 years, comprising 75 % research towards a PhD, and 25 % teaching or other duties. Exceptionally 3-year appointments may be made with 100 % research. The successful candidate will be member of the SoftICE lab (Software and Intelligent Control Engineering). The workplace is at Aalesund University College.
The faculty has undergraduate engineering programs in computing, automation, electrical engineering, and civil engineering, as well as a post-graduate program in simulation and visualisation.
The PhD fellow will develop data models and system architecture to support gathering, storage, processing, and retrieval of field study data, including both multimedia and other types of data.
We seek a person with strong collaborative skills and motivation, and the successful candidate will be part of a creative and informal academic environment that places heavy demands on independence and ability to take initiative.
Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in computing or another relevant discipline
  • Strong programming skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Keen interest in the wider context of own research and an ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teams
  • Written and oral fluency in English

Knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is an asset, but not essential.
It is essential that the successful candidate fills the requirement for admission to a doctoral program. The successful candidate must be engaged in an appropriate doctoral program prior to commencement in the position, cf. “Regulations on conditions of employment for positions as postdoctoral fellow, research fellow, research assistant and specialist candidates § 3-1”.
Scholarship recipients must work at Aalesund University College and must participate in an organized doctoral study. AAUC does not currently award its own PhD degrees, but we will assist in finding and applying for a PHD program with partner or other institutions.
In assessing applications, particular emphasis will be placed upon the academic and personal ability of the PhD candidate to complete the project within the given timeframe and write a thesis under supervision.
Recruitment decisions will be made in consultation with project partners. Interviews with selected candidates will be arranged, in which original diplomas / certificates etc., are expected to be presented.

  • Copies of diplomas and educational certificates
  • Names and contact details of 2-3 referees

Applicants are encouraged to submit a draft project plan for their PhD studies and a maximum of two samples of written work (e.g. published papers or MSc thesis).
