{"id":493,"date":"2021-10-04T09:16:27","date_gmt":"2021-10-04T07:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ntnu.no\/blogger\/afino\/?p=493"},"modified":"2023-01-13T09:42:37","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T08:42:37","slug":"new-article-on-norways-food-waste-reduction-governance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ntnu.no\/blogger\/afino\/2021\/10\/04\/new-article-on-norways-food-waste-reduction-governance\/","title":{"rendered":"New article on Norway&#8217;s Food Waste Reduction Governance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are companies alone willing to impose self-regulation to limit food waste or is pressure from the government and civil society necessary? <br>In a recent article published in Scandinavian Political Studies, Julia Szulecka and Nhat-Str\u00f8m Andersen look at the case of Norway to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.no\/blogger\/afino\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2021\/10\/0001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-498\" width=\"242\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.no\/blogger\/afino\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2021\/10\/0001.jpg 558w, https:\/\/www.ntnu.no\/blogger\/afino\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2021\/10\/0001-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sub>Julia Szulecka and Nhat-Str\u00f8m Andersens article is published in Scandinavian Political Studies. <\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new article entitled&nbsp;\u2018<em>Norway&#8217;s Food Waste Reduction Governance: From Industry Self-Regulation to Governmental Regulation?\u2019&nbsp;<\/em>results from research conducted in the BREAD project (Building Responsibility and Developing Innovative Strategies for Tackling Food Waste). <br>BREAD is one of AFINOs four satellite projects, coordinated by the Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture (TIK) at the University of Oslo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paper provides an in\u2010depth analysis of the emergence and evolution of Norway&#8217;s food waste reduction governance, with the Industry Agreement on Reduction of Food Waste from 2017 as the main milestone. <br>Using the method of outcome\u2010explaining process tracing, it tests three hypotheses, identifying causal factors and mechanisms that explain the emergence of the Agreement, and applies a typology of (self\u2010)regulation to show how different actors and mechanisms played an important role in different phases of the process.<br><br>The main finding is that initially, food waste reduction governance was clearly industry-led. However, societal and political pressure was necessary for institutionalizing self-regulation and its timing. <br>Despite Norway&#8217;s tradition for co-regulation, in the wake of the Agreement, lawmakers continued to pressure the government for a binding law, with a clear move from initial industry self-regulation towards state-steered regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This paper contributes to the still limited literature on food waste governance, as well as the much broader research on industry self\u2010regulation.<br><br>Read the article in Scandinavian Political Studies (open access):<br><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1467-9477.12219\">https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1467-9477.12219<\/a> <br><br><br><em>Featured image: Julia Szulecka and Nhat Str\u00f8m-Andersen.
