As a researcher, I define myself as a molecular ecological taxonomist who has a strong interest in methodologies and in combining ecological, morphological and molecular information in the studies. Earlier, this interest has brought me to the question of methodologies in bioinformatics and in species delineation.
My educational background is in aquatic ecology (University of Helsinki; hydrobiology, plant ecology, systematics and physical oceanography). The molecular work and bioinformatics I have learned while conducting my Ph.D. work, which I finished with a title Linking taxonomy and environmental 18S-rRNA-gene sequencing of Baltic Sea protists in 2013.
My position as a postdoctoral fellow in the EBAI project will involve metabarcoding of freshwater invertebrates using Illumina MiSeq platform. The aim of the project is to test if metabarcoding is applicable for monitoring purposes. We will test different sampling strategies and methodologies, from DNA capture to bioinformatics.
