The Knowledge Centre Kalvskinnet
The Knowledge Centre Kalvskinnet is a concept for public research communication and knowledge-based experiences under one roof.
The new knowledge centre has a planned location at the museum’s area at Kalvskinnet.
About the project:
The Knowledge Centre Kalvskinnet aims to:
- be a visible actor in society, and contribute with knowledge and stimulate reflection on nature, culture, environment and technology in the past, present and future;
- be an area for contact between NTNU and society;
- protect, preserve and make available the scientific collections to researchers and the public;
- strengthen the interest and recruiting for scientific subjects and technology;
- make Trondheim known as a city of technology and knowledge.
The Knowledge Centre Kalvskinnet is based on cooperation between three strong dissemination actors in Trondheim:
- Vitensenteret in Trondheim, which is a popular science centre for technology and natural sciences.
- The UBiT Gunnerus Library, a section at the University Library in Trondheim and the oldest library in Norway.
- The Museum of Natural History and Archaeology, originating from Det Trondhjemske Selskab established in 1760.
A new building at Kalvskinnet will strengthen the knowledge centre’s basic functions by:
- establishing good constructional conditions for the protection, preservation and availability of the museum’s scientific collections;
- establish separate exhibition areas and offices for the activities at the Vitensenter;
- establish common exhibition areas, facilities for the public, learning rooms, workshops, cafés and shops.
The Knowledge Centre Kalvskinnet has a long-term strategic goal of developing into an internationally outstanding centre for research-based knowledge dissemination.
