What is the Internet?

The Internet is a world wide network made up of larger and smaller computer networks. Each computer connected to the Internet can reach any other computer with an address on the network. Internet forms the basis for the World Wide Web, e-mail, chat and other services.

In this module we will use the following terms:

The Internet
A network of computer networks and computer users worldwide
The Web
The World Wide Web, more commonly referred to as WWW or the web, is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. - you navigate by clicking forward to the relevant information. The web uses several medias and includes several forms of information, such as sound, image and video
Web page
A web page is the same as home page or Internet page. An Internet site is made up of related web pages
Browser
is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. Examples of browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera
Web search engine
A search engine is a computer program that searches for words in files or documents on the web. Examples of search engines are Google and Yahoo!
