For students
VIKO is an interactive course in information literacy designed for students at NTNU. Consisting of seven different modules, the course provides help in searching for information and writing papers.
VIKO is primarily intended for students at beginner level. You can take VIKO as a full course or use parts and modules as tools to find literature, evaluate the quality of information you find, write papers and reference lists. VIKO as a tool box can be used at any study level.
There are subjectVIKOs for most of the subjects/study-programs at NTNU. These modules provide details about subject-specific information resources and are intended for all study levels.
For teachers
Information literacy is knowing when and why you need information and the ability to identify, locate, evaluate, organise and effectively use information.
It is important to teach students information literacy at an early stage and introduce them to guidelines for citation and use of sources.
VIKO is an interactive course in information literacy designed for students at NTNU. Consisting of seven different modules, the course provides help in searching for information and writing papers. The modules and their component parts present ways to navigate through the information flow, and provide practical tools for finding literature, evaluating the quality of the information and writing papers and references. VIKO can be implemented as part of other library and university courses, and integrated in NTNU's learning platform, it's:learning. VIKO is linked from it’s:learning’s homepage, and is available for all teachers and students.
We have created a final multiple choice test, covering the most important subjects in VIKO. By taking the final test, the students can verify that they have completed VIKO as a course. The test is available on the e-learning platform it's:learning where students sign on with individual passwords, and thus it is easy to control that they have taken the test.
VIKO frees time for academic staff by providing a tool for information retrieval and writing academic papers.
The subject guide can be used as a course in information retrieval within a subject, and also as a practical tool in finding information sources and getting help in using them
VIKO is based on a pedagogical platform focusing on problem solving. VIKO provides a complete course in information literacy. The individual modules can be used on their own, and VIKO can also be used as a reference tool
The module writing papers provides guidelines for writing academic papers and includes guidelines for citation and reference writing and also addresses the consequences of plagiarism.
