Creating an Interactive Library Experience

MUBIL

- a digital laboratory

MUBIL is an international research project that aims mainly at

Establishing a novel learning framework based on Virtual Environments technologies in order to disseminate the content of library archives, especially manuscripts and Libri Rari.

It also intends to

1. Develop a virtual learning space within the physical space of our library/museum Institution as to disseminate the content of our Special Collections that are of great scientific importance both nationally and internationally.

2.Use novel technology to allow visitor interaction on several levels of growing immersion.

3.Communicate with new groups of users and create dynamic linkages between the public and our collections by spreading knowledge.

4. Gather data on how people interact with 3D technology and virtual objects in a mixed environment.

Financing: The project  has a total budget of 2.5 million and is financed mainly by NTNU, and Scuola Superiore Sant`Anna and partly by the National Library of Norway.

The project will be launched in October 2013.

Interactive experience
School children will be invited to "perform" certain tasks in a virtual reconstruction of an old laboratory. Thus they are introduced to a game environment in a power wall with a 3D projector.

They will have to "fish" the instruments and information needed through a series of manuscripts, old books and artifacts through 3D technology haptic instruments. These are augmented books that are enriched with adds-on and thus amplified by information related not only to the text and the book itself but also the period they were created in and specific subjects the writer relates to..

They will be invited to browse through the information and contribute his/her narrative to the use of the book on a different lever of the board, called the "story-board".

This level of visitor interaction will remain open for the next visitor to contribute a new narrative as well. School classes will then experiment with the application through specific tasks in groups and in the frame of subject specific workshops together with their teachers in an effort to investigate the outcome of such an interactive gaming in a library-museum environment.

In 2013 there will be produced a film in cooperation with Namtaru Creations.

Mubil going live

The 15th of November a new idea was finally born: Mubil in cooperation with the Museum of Natural History and archaeology organised an interactive workshop for 40 school children.

An exhibition of rare books in 3D, an interactive workshop of tactile knowledge through experimentation and knowledge from the past went live on the site. A day ready for interaction and learning.

For the first time 40 students from Stabbburmoens school came for a Mubil workshop on November 15. Fredrik and Lise had put the fire on under the distillation oven at 6 o`clock in the morning. Behind Suhmhuset, Fredrik would show the young students how he worked in reconstructing a process of chemistry from a book written back in 16th century.

The book of Adam Lonicer gave us the knowledge of the process in description and the drawings you can see in the book Kreuterbuch . The book probably published in 1560, has coloured illustrations and is pretty rare and valuable.
Browse through the book and zoom into its text from the website of the special collections of the Gunnerus library here.

Art in the Library

- with Irene D. Marquez

Mubil enters a new phase where art will be used as communication tool for High School students! A collaboration with Namtaru creations was started in January 2013 as our proposal was funded by the Norwegian Art Council.

The workshop called  "Art in the Library". is a new workshop concept introduced by our library in collaboration with  Irene  Dominquez Marquez who is the project leader of the workshop and will also set up an exhibition together with the students. She brought colors into Mubil and enlivened the old contours from the Alchemy books of the 17th and 18th century and opened up new perspectives. The creativity brought in to the project by Irene D.M. has actually lifted up not only the esthetic possibilities of the Mubil project but it has brought us to a new phase. Arvid Karlsen will also be working with the website of the workshops where the products of the workshop will be presented. The workshop will bring High school students to the Mubil laboratory where they will learn about the illustration techniques of the past, bookbinding and digital storytelling with Irene, Arvid and our Chemistry expert Fredrik M. Kirkemo. Gunnerus library will be working together with the art class of Tron Rømo from Steiner school for an exhibition to be set up the 22nd of March at the library.

The Illustration on the

right comes from "Kreutebuch" of Adam Lonicer (1528-1590) who was a doctor in Frankfurt-Main and published this book as a manual of distillation process for herbs," for every man even the poorest to be able to perform such an experiment". This is one of the books to be "enriched" that is to become an augmented book. It`s illustrations, which are many, have a story to tell.

As on the left here depicted, we see the garden which is the source of all the medicinal plants and herbs in the back. To the left one sees a gathering of scientists or alchemists of the time discussing matters of science, while to the right we see the distillation process with two people working and vessels with cups, while the herbs gathered lay on a plate next to them. At a deeper level to the right we see the doctor, holding the produced remedy in his hand paying a visit to the patient! A series of augmented books will be available as a virtual library on hand before an experiment will be performed.

Validation of the project

Validation of the project: When the software tool is launched the IDI (Department of Computer and Information Science) will provide us with the Master students that will function as the first experts to use the board and fill it with applications and specific datasets. They will be testing the specific capabilities of the software and will give us feedback on how it can be improved. After a round with improvement the tool will be launched, as a pilot project for school students into a three d room at the library and visitors will be invited to use it.

The digital laboratory project ( MUBIL: Museum and library) is an international interdisciplinary collaboration and will investigate ways to use 3D technology and disseminate books or objects of past times from the special collections of Gunnerus Library in an environment where visitors will be able to interact with the collections in a new way through an enriched virtual laboratory. The project aims in communicating with new groups of library users, create social engagement and spread knowledge. In addition the project will also gather data on how young people interact with such software tools and virtual objects in a library environment.
