• ANNUAL REPORT 2013
Synchronous measurements of the sea current and
the water level elevation were perfomed in the naviga-
tional channel in Akselsundet in the Van Mijen Fjord in
September 2013. The water level was measured at two
points from different sides of Akseløya with pressure
recorders SBE-39 places at the sea bottom and fixed
onshore with a wire (Figure 30a). Floaters with GPS
antennas were used to monitor surface currents with
sampling interval 1 s. Trajectories of the floaters when
the water is going into the fjord and out of the fjord are
shown in Figures 29a and 30b respectively. Maximal
measured velocities reached 2 m/s. Analysis of surface
currents shown dominated the out flux of the water from
the Van Mijen Fjord in Akselsundet.
Ice drift
Vertical profiling of water temperature and conductiv-
ity (CTD profiling) and water velocities (ADCP profil-
ing) has been performed in each cruise of RV Lance.
The CTD profiling was performed with sensor SBE-19,
and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) profil-
ing was performed with ship (RDI BB-VM 150 kHz), and
autonomous ADCP units RDI 1200 kHz and AWAC 300
kHz. Locations of CTD and ADCP profiling are shown in
Figure 31.
An ADCP unit AWAC 300 kHz was deployed in September
2012 near Vestpynten in the Ice Fjord and was retrieved
in October 2013. The data include sea current
