NORDIC LIGHT & COLOUR
25
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine whether the daylight
in Nordic countries is significantly different from daylight in
other regions. Approaches used in this study stretch from the
analysis of painter’s thoughts on the colour and light of a place
to the examination of solar diagrams, the calculation of solar
angle and the examination of climatic data. The conclusion of
the study is that daylight in Nordic countries is significantly
different. The reasons are: a very low mean solar angle during
the year, long periods of twilight and a high frequency of over-
cast sky. Those geographical and climatic facts have a strong
impact on the illuminance level on the ground, the colour of
daylight and the modelling of landscape, buildings, terrain and
peoples. A series of specific phenomena may be observed in
Nordic countries, as e.g. white nights, self-luminous objects
and a heavy cloud coat.
