Are you interested in the coast? Would you like to develop the necessary knowledge for building infrastructure, protecting the environment, developing value creation, and exploiting the coastal resources safely and efficiently?
This Master of Science degree programme in Coastal and Marine Civil Engineering is a two year graduate study programme which integrates Norwegian and foreign students. As such, all lectures are conducted in English. Each course yields 7.5 ECTS credits and is designed for the advanced engineering programme Civil and Environmental Engineering.
For those who choose to seek admission to the full programme, please note the varying application deadlines and procedures. On completion of the programme, graduates are awarded the title Master of Science.
Norwegian / Nordic applicants
The programme will not be open for Norwegian/Nordic applicants in 2010. If you are a Norwegian/Nordic applicant you should instead apply for the two year Norwegian study programme in Civil and Environmental Engineering (MIBYGG) , through which one may choose the same subjects as in this International master's programme (COASTMAR).
Emphasis
While the first year of the study consists of basic compulsory and optional courses on graduate level, the second year provides a specialization in Marine Civil Engineering through a specialization project and course. In addition one completive course must be chosen. The specialization is supplemented by a non-technical course. In order to best prepare participants for a role in the value-generative and sustainable development of the coastal and northern regions, the curriculum emphasizes the following areas of activity:
describing the physical marine environment (wind, waves, current and ice)
effects of load from the marine environment and load effects on the coast and coastal structures
the development of coastal and harbour infrastructure
Formal prerequisites: BSc/BEng degree in Civil Engineering, Coastal Engineering or Harbour Engineering — including (1) a basic course in hydromechanics/fluid dynamics, as well as (2) a minimum of 30 ECTS-credits in mathematics / statistics. Applicants with an equivalent BSc/BEng degree in Engineering may also be considered if they have 2-3 years of relevant work experience within port and coastal works. ťAdmissions requirements
