Faglig innhold
The thesis must have a scientific structure, be founded on valid theory, and make adequate use of the appropriate literature. The project for the master's thesis must be relevant to neuroscience. Topic and project are prepared in consultation with a supervisor, and will be subject to approval by the study programme council. The student must participate actively in research through his/her work on the project. The supervisor is appointed by agreement. It is the student's responsibility to contact possible supervisors for his/her project early on in the program. The research project is scheduled for 2 semesters, but it is recommended that the student starts planning the thesis early and does some work on it during the entire study period. The evaluation is based on the thesis and an oral examination, where the student presents his/her project with discussion. The oral examination is used to adjust the grade of the thesis. Students must write the thesis in English. After successful defense of the thesis the student
- has in depth knowledge into one subfield of neuroscience;
- has the competence to formulate a research question based on adequate insight into current knowledge;
- has the skill to apply and adopt experimental methods to gain new knowledge;
- has the skill to obtain, record and interpret experimental data; is able to retrieve and interpret published scientific data;
- has the competence to report outcomes of research and defend interpretations and conclusions in a coherent way, both orally and in writing

In addition to the written work, there will be an oral exam. The examiners will set a preliminary grade on the written work before the oral exam. The grade given on the written work may be adjusted up to one grade (up or down) after the oral exam. In the event of a grade F (not passed) for the written work, an oral exam will not be held. A new or revised thesis with significant changes may be submitted for assessment one more time. The course coordinator for the master's thesis, in consultation with the student and the supervisor(s), will schedule a new deadline for submission within six months. The head of department decides how much supervision the student is entitled to when revising the work (approximately 10 hours). When the student has received a passing grade on the master's thesis, it is not possible to have a new thesis assessed within the same study program.

The student must be admitted to the Master of Science in Neuroscience. In order to be eligible to defend his/her master's thesis the student must have passed all exams, i.e. compulsory and elective courses worth 60 credits in total.
