Faglig innhold

This course is focused on providing an advanced basis for modeling and analysis of metabolic networks, and applications in metabolic engineering.
Topics to be discussed:
1. Linear programming basics
- The Simplex Method
- Degeneracy
- Duality Theory
- Integer programming
2. Metabolic network analysis
- Reconstruction of networks from data
- Properties of reconstructed networks
3. Modeling and analysis of genome-level metabolism
- Principles of constraint-based modeling to analyze metabolic networks
- Flux balance analysis (FBA)
- Methods for determining model phenotypes
- Minimization of Metabolic Adjustment (MoMA)
- Dynamic FBA


Note: This course is only given every other year, first time fall 2010.

Læringsutbytte

At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Explain the principles and central methods of linear programming, as well as formulate and solve linear programming problems using pen and paper or MatLab

2. Discuss the steps involved in metabolic network reconstruction, and describe how to evaluate a model’s fidelity

3. Explain the principles of constraint-based modeling, and discuss its strengths and weaknesses, as well as using computer analysis to determine a model’s phenotypic behavior

4. Use FBA, MoMA, and dynamic FBA to analyze a metabolic model and further modify it to achieve a predetermined objective

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

Forelesninger, presentasjon og diskusjon av tidsskrift-artikler, data øvinger og prosjektarbeidet under veiledning av faglærer. Emnet undervises på engelsk og som et intensivt fag med 3 møter (hvert på 2 hele dager) i løpet av semesteret.
