BI8010 - Systems Biology: Examples from Current Literature

The objective of the course is to train young researchers to understand how systems approaches can help to answer biological questions. A journal club is an important instrument to build a systems biology community. We offer a journal club for PhD students (but other interested parties may participate) where students select recent papers related to systems biology/integrative biology and present a detailed analysis and review of the work. The focus will be on discussing recent advances in systems biology approach, and discussions of possible shortcomings and improvements. The course will span two semesters, and will cover four thematic areas, or sections: -omics, data integration, dynamical modelling and systems biology-based experiment design. This means that the majority of the papers discussed in such a section will be related to this area. Students will discuss the content and form of their presentation with the teacher, prior to giving the presentation.
The objective of the course is to train young researchers in applying systems approaches to address biological questions. The course will help creating a culture of systems biology at NTNU. The course will give the PhD students profound knowledge about omics, data integration, dynamical modeling and systems biology based experiment design.
Læringsformer og aktiviteter
Presentations and discussions will be in English. Students will be judged on their presentation and written paper report.
Obligatoriske aktiviteter Reading papers - presentation
Attendance will be mandatory, with a minimum required attendance per period. Each student will be expected to present at least 4 times. Presentations will be made available internally; short summaries of the presented work will have to be provided together with the presentation. These will serve to score the performance of students. After each section students will be asked to write short report on the major findings presented in that area.

Molecular Biology, molecular cell biology, biotechnology, molecular medicine, basic knowledge of statistics will be required.
