When you work and are paid a salary in Norway you must also pay tax to the Norwegian government. All employees must have a tax deduction card, which is issued by the local tax assessment office (Trondheim likningskontor). You must talk to them personally. The Norwegian Directorate of Taxes has a number of webpages in English that explain Norway's tax system and how you should fill out your tax forms.
SALARIES
Salaries in Norway are usually paid on a monthly basis; at NTNU, salaries are normally paid out on the 12th of each month. To pay you, NTNU needs your Norwegian bank account number. However, in order to open a bank account you must have a Norwegian identity number. Without an ID number, you cannot open a bank account, and without a bank account, there is no way for NTNU to pay you. It can be a bit of a Catch-22, but perserverance furthers.
HOLIDAYS
NTNU employees receive 5 weeks of paid holiday time a year (i.e. 25 working days based on a 5-day week). Norway has a system where holiday pay (feriepenger) is paid out to eligible employees in June. It is calculated as 12 % of the holiday pay earnings from the previous year.

The ratio of work time to spare time is quite favourable. I have more time for thinking and contemplation, too.
