There is a need for longitudinal studies of psychiatric and developmental
disorders in children.
ENGLISH SUMMARY
This article reviews recent prevalence studies of developmental and behavioural disorders, and neurological
and psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. The authors highlight the degree of comorbidity among
these conditions and emphasize the complexity of models that should be used in order to understand how
different factors and mechanisms affect children's development and mental health. Further, studies of course
and duration of deviant development in childhood, studies of protective factors and contributions from
behavioural genetic studies to the understanding of these conditions, are addressed. Finally, the authors
discuss the possibility of using prospective, epidemiological studies in a developmental perspective in order to
understand etiological and developmental factors, course and prognosis. Such knowledge would lay the
foundations for planning preventive interventions and individual treatment.
