Exercise and Extreme Environments
Exercise in Medicine
Physical activity is essential for good health and performance. A large number of studies show that regular exercise prevents cardiovascular disease, overweight, diabetes, muscular pain, and many other conditions that reduce quality of life and longevity.
The main goal of our activities is to improve training programs for prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Translational research identifies the cellular and molecular mechanisms that help the body cope with physical challenges. Population Surveys investigate how social, environmental, and occupational factors interact with physical activity and fitness.
Exercise Physiology and Sport Sciences
This Master of Science Program has two main objectives. The first is to understand the training responses of muscle strength, co-ordination, and aerobic fitness. Application for top sports performance is a central goal.
The second objective is to develop effective training programs tailored to meet individual patient needs. Both take advantage of new developments in exercise physiology and specific training interventions.
Environmental Physiology and Physiological Genomics
This international PhD Program Physiology is established as a joint degree between the School of Medicine at the University of Split, Croatia, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.
Environmental physiology investigates how the organism reacts to changes in the external environment like temperature, pressure and gas tensions that occur during diving, high-altitude mountain climbing, and space excursions. Advanced physiology studies are integrated with physiological genomics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
