IFUS - Admission Requirements
Introductory Programme in Norwegian Language
General Requirements:
The minimum admission requirements vary depending on the country of origin and its educational system becuase students admitted to the IFUS programme are offered conditional admission for further studies. If the IFUS programme is successfully completed, the conditional status will be converted to regular admission.
For more additional information about admission requirements, please see "Getting started - Studies at NTNU - A Guide for International Students".
IFUS applicants are generally accepted as guest students without a guaranteed education plan after the IFUS programme. If you are interested in applying to the one-year programme, you can obtain the application form at the Office of International Relations. Call and request the application form for the 1-year full-time Norwegian programme. The deadline is 1 June for applicants who already have a regular residence permit in Norway. Note that it is not possible to obtain a residence permit based on a guest student status in the Norwegian programme.
IFUS Language prerequisites:
Applicants to the Introductory Programme in the Norwegian Language (IFUS) must pass either:
EXCEPTIONS:
- Citizens of Ireland, UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not have to submit TOEFL/IELTS test results.
- Applicants who have attended and passed at least one year of upper secondary school or university in any of these countries are exempt.
- Applicants from African countries with a BA/BSc/BEng degree where the language of instruction was English and those who have passed English as a subject at GCE A-level with grade C or better, are exempt.
- Applicants with a university degree in English language (BA in English) are also exempt from the language requirement.
Please notice that applicants from Asian countries (for example Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam) with a BA/BSc/BEng degree where English was the language of instruction are not exempted from the English language requirements, except for candidates holding a BA degree in English.
Financial requirements
All applicants to the IFUS programme have to document their ability to support their entire studies in Norway. The immigration authorities at present require a minimum of NOK 80 000 (approximately USD 11500) per year for each year of study. Failure to do so, will result in rejection of the application.
Individual education plan requirement
All applicants have to give at least three alternative choices of studies after the IFUS programme. The Office of International Relations will as far as possible try to give you your first choice. All applicants will have their education compared to the requirements for the individual courses, and compete with the Norwegian applicants for places in courses with restricted admission. In the event that it is not possible to offer any of the alternatives chosen by the applicant, the application will be rejected.
Please note that we CANNOT consider applications for medicine, the professional study for psychology or architecture.
Education Plan Changes*
* applies specifically to IFUS students
Applicants admitted to the IFUS programme are accepted into a specified programme of study for a specified length of time. Please be aware that any changes will usually be denied. It is therefore important that you carefully consider what programme of study you apply for.
The residence permit to Norway for IFUS students is granted on the basis of the "Admission Letter". Any changes made to the education plan or length of study time may therefore jeopardize your residence permit. Any changes to the education plan must be approved by the Office of International Relations, and will normally come only as a result of an evaluation of previous education.
If you decide to apply to change your education plan, you must contact the coordinator at the Office of International Relations as soon as possible. The coordinator will carefully go through these plans with you, and if they are acceptable recommend that your student permit is extended. Note that such changes usually require that the student applies through the Universities and Colleges Admission Service - UCAS (Samordnet Opptak). The coordinator will inform you about the necessary procedure and application forms for such an application.
CREDIT TRANSFER
Please note that the Norwegian academic system and the NTNU grading system may differ from what you are used to in your home country. This might often complicate credit transfer matters and it is therefore extremely important that you consider this in your plans for study at NTNU. The Office of International Relations will guide all students accepted on the IFUS programme through the process of evaluation and in drawing up the final education plan upon arrival.
