Geographical Information Systems at NTNU

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the Department of Geography consist of cartography, GIS, and remote sensing. The Department aims to profile itself in the development of GIS, applied GIS, and GIS in society. This includes software development in addition to different user environments and design of improved interfaces in GIS, supported by perception theory and graphic communications theory. Further, GIS will be developed as a general tool for assisting quantitative analysis, together with remote sensing (including aerial photography), for use in research on natural resource management, landscape and population.

Particular emphasis will be placed on GIS in developing countries.

Further, focus will be on GIS as an innovation in different institutions. In addition to consolidating these fields in which the Department already has a strong development, the Department will concentrate on developing further fields.
