New book on 'Cathodes in Aluminium Electrolysis'Photo: Gøril Klemetsen
Professor Harald A. Øye with the recent Russian edition of Professor Sørlie´s and his 'Cathode book'. The book Morten Sørlie and H.A. Øye: 'Cathodes in Aluminium Electrolysis' has now been translated to Russian. after earlier being published in Germany and translated to Chinese. The subject may appear specialized, and it is not a standard textbook, but a book all aluminium smelters buy.The main theme is to apply science and experience for prolonging the life of aluminium production cells. Liquid electrolyte and liquid aluminium at 970 °C are not very forgiving. The slightest mistake in design, materials selection, workmanship during cell construction, start-up and operation will lead to early failures. The cells are up to 14 meter long, and every failure cost about $ 100.000 in rebuilding. Only in Norway there are approx. 3000 aluminium cells, and it then becomes important if the life is 2-3 years instead of more than 6 years. |
