New type of gas bus comes to Trondheim

This was the bus that inaugurated the gas bus trials in Trondheim in 1993.

As part of its trials of natural gas-fuelled buses, Trondheim will acquire a different type of gas bus towards the end of 1994. This will be the first Norwegian bus to be fuelled by liquid natural gas (LNG). The bus will be fuelled at a specially built filling station at MARINTEK in the SINTEF Group.

In liquid form, the gas contains more energy per unit weight and volume than compressed natural gas (CNG), which is what Trondheim's other gas-fuelled buses carry in their fuel tanks. MARINTEK will compare the relative costs, advantages and disadvantages of these two techniques of storage.

The gas bus trials are a collaborative effort that involves MARINTEK, Trondheim Bus Company and the Ministry of Transport. The bus engines are built to run on natural gas according to MARINTEKs "recipe." Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from such buses are only 20% of the equivalent emissions from modern diesel engines
