Environmental benifitsTo what extent can we reduce pollutants in marine diesel exhaust emissions? MARINTEK researchers evaluate the different measures as follows: Minor engine modifications and adaptations: the level of harmful exhaust emissions from diesel engines is dependent on the design and operating efficiency of the individual engine. Given these limitations, simple measures can reduce NOx emissions by 10 - 20%. Exhaust gas recirculation: this can reduce NOx by 30 - 40%, while it increases fuel consumption by some 3 - 5%. Using fuel oil-water emulsions (in combination with minor engine modifications and adaptations): this can reduce NOx by 30 - 40%, on the penalty of an increase in fuel consumption of some 3 - 5%. New technology for improved combustion control: the aim of the "Low Emission Diesel Engines" project is to achieve a 60% reduction in NOx emissions and a 30% reduction in particle emissions without increasing the low fuel consumption that is a feature of modern engines. |
