Small ammonia plants are next

In a laboratory at SINTEF/NTH the next generation of ammonia-based heat pumps is already taking shape. Under the terms of a contract for the State Pollution Control Authority the Trondheim refrigeration scientists have developed technology that will make it possible to build compact, completely automatic small systems; ammonia-based heat pumps and refrigeration units that can be operated without the need for refrigeration engineers. So far, this work has produced a laboratory prototype. "We have got to the stage of trying to get the system industrialized," says section manager Geir Eggen at SINTEF Refrigeration Engineering.
