The Montreal Protocol against CFC gases

In 1987, Norway and a further 24 countries as well as the EU, signed a protocol which has the aim of helping to reduce the use of substances that deplete the ozone layer. These include halogenised hydrocarbons (chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs), in particular completely halogenized refrigerants such as CFC 11, 12 and 502. Starting in 1991, it was forbidden to install new facilities utilizing these media in Norway, and according to the reduction plan, all use of these compounds will have ceased by the end of 1996. However, HCFC 22, the dominant cooling medium used by the fishing industry, is not due to be phased out until 2030.
