Combined blast and fragment loading
The topic of my PhD project is the effect of combined blast and fragment loading on steel plates. The research comprises numerical and experimental investigations of the separate mechanism that might contribute to the interaction effect observed in experiments. Fragments occur whether they are intended or not, e.g. soil, tools or detached structural elements can be accelerated by the blast wave. The research is of interest in the design of both civil and defence structures exposed to an explosive threat. Examples include accommodation units in international operations, oil drilling platforms and processing plants.
