CURRENT PROJECTS

I am working on implementing magnetic resonance (MR) imaging protocols for detection of abnormalities of the bone and connective tissue. The methods will be evaluated on patients with psoriatic arthritis and metastatic breast cancer patients.

Whole-body diffusion-weighted MR imaging of breast cancer patients

Metastatic disease is the most common cause of death due to cancer, with more than 90% of all cancer-related deaths due to metastases, with the bones being the most common target for distant metastasis in breast cancer patients. Accurate assessment of the extent of the disease is important for treatment planning and clinical decision making. In this study, I am implementing and optimizing a whole-body protocol for the detection of breast cancer metastases using diffusion-weighted imaging at the clinical 3.0 Tesla MR scanner in St Olavs Hospital. I aim to evaluate the added diagnostic value of diffusion in a whole-body protocol for staging of breast cancer patients.

Assessment of training effect in psoriatic arthritis patients with MR

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory joint disease that develops in patients with psoriasis and manifests highly heterogeneous clinical symptoms, including a broad spectrum of inflammatory changes in multiple locations of the body. Regular exercise can be recommended as anti-inflammatory therapy, based on the effects of exercise on basal levels of  inflammatory markers. MRI is supposed to be the most sensitive imaging modality for the assessment of structures critical in the evolution of inflammatory disease. In this study, we aim to measure the effect of exercise in patients with psoriatic arthritis using MR imaging.

EDUCATION

I have a Master in Biomedical Engineering from School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece, 2006 – 2011. In 2011, I defended my thesis in the field of Computational Neuroscience.
