Career Summary

I completed my PhD in the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge in June 2010. I taught History at Cambridge and then at Cardiff University before accepting the position of Associate Professor of British Social and Cultural studies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology starting in August 2011.

Research Interests

My research interests include the history of British Conservative politics from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, interwar European fascism, and political writing/ publishing. In 2007 I won the George Mosse prize for the best article by a newly published author in the Journal of Contemporary History. I am now writing a book about the intellectual history of the British Conservative party, 1924-40. The book focuses on Conservative historians, writers, and politicians as political writers and broadcasters. My next major project will research British political cultures and the media during the Cold War.

Master's/ PhD Thesis Supervision

I am happy to discuss proposals for Master's & PhD supervision in most areas of nineteenth & twentieth century British political, cultural, and social history. I will also consider some topics that focus on the USA. Interdisciplinary subjects (for example, those that make good use of literary texts or political theories associated with the social sciences) will be accepted if I feel that I have the relevant expertese to supervise them. I will also consider research projects on current affairs and politics in the twenty-first century. Finally, I am interested in comparative approaches to the history of Britain and Norway, or more broadly Scandinavia.

You should note that I am an academic historian and you will be expected to use a range of primary sources in your thesis alongside secondary literature. Access to viable sources is an important consideration when formulating your thesis topics.
