ETH Zürich, Insitute for Urban Design

True to its status of one of the leading universities of technology, the ETH Zurich has developed the vision of Science City as a contemporary expression of its traditional qualities. Science City is not only a physical concept for the reorganization of the ETH complexes ETH-Zentrum and ETH-Hoenggerberg, but even more a concept of how the university activities integrate, interact and communicate with the city of Zurich and related institutions elsewhere. Essentially, Science City is a networking concept between the ETH, other universities and society.

In the light of this concept, the ETH-Hoenggerberg, a campus of the 1960s, is transformed from a mono-functional university compound into an urban quarter, where teaching, research, spin-off activities, living, amenities and sport will create a complementary environment. The transformation and planning of Science City is a participatory process, involving all possible stakeholders, from local residents in adjacent neighbourhoods to politicians. One of the key-goals of the operation is a sustainability concept to turn the whole ETH into a low-energy institution. To exchange ideas about such a concept, the ETH engages actively in activities in the field of university transformation around the world. In May 2006, ETH’s Network City and Landscape hosted an international symposium on ‘Campus Design’, which has a follow up with the conference ‘Competitive Campuses’ at NTNU in Trondheim.
