The construction sector is often dubbed the 40% sector, because it consumes about 40% of the total energy used in industrialized countries, it also uses about 40% of the materials and produces 40% of the refuse. Therefore, more focus on sustainability in the construction sector may have a great impact on such major issues as the global climate change, and may also improve the environment in other ways.
Energy use is of prime importance in securing a more sustainable construction sector. There is a host of technical measures available that can reduce the energy demand in buildings, many of them with important impacts on architecture. Energy considerations may therefore be an important determinant for architecture, wanted or unwanted by the responsible designer.
On the other hand, it is many times difficult to identify why some buildings claim low-energy status by studying the architecture alone. It is therefore often concluded that energy-conscious architecture does not have to show its energy features for the uninitiated. But some designers use the energy measures as an important input to their architectural design.
Therefore, we may conclude that there is no obvious simple connection between energy-conscious design of buildings and the architecture of the same buildings. The seminar will discuss this interaction from both standpoints:
What are the engineering-type of energy saving features that may interact with architecture? What are the impacts on the architecture?
What energy-saving features may be introduced by the designer as an inspiration to new architecture? Or should we rather hide the energy-saving features and stick to the “conventional” architectural values?
These issues are of course of great importance to the education and research conducted in the NTNU departments responsible for architecture and energy use. One important objective of the seminar is thus to provide input to the planned international Master-program in Sustainable Architecture and similar plans in the Energy and Environment program in the engineering faculties of NTNU.
The seminar will not cover all connections between energy and architecture, but limit the topics to the physical manifestation of buildings. The reason for this is the intention to cover the research interest of both architects and engineers. The seminar is aimed at NTNU and SINTEF researchers active in this field, but it will also useful for graduate level students in architecture and relevant engineering. We intend also to open the seminar for the local practicing design community. The seminar locality limits the participation to around 200 people.
Tema for dagen er forholdet mellom forskning og AoK (arkitektonisk og kunstnerisk virksomhet). Eyal Wiezman fra Centre for Research Architecture ved Goldsmith College, University of London vil holde hovedinnlegget. Se mer informasjon om ham under. I tillegg vil ansatte presentere ulike perspektiver på kunst, arkitektur og forskning, og det blir satt av god tid for debatt om hvordan AoK inngår og kan videreutvikles som en viktig del av fakultetets faglige virksomhet.

Den 22. november 2007 arrangerte fakultetet for Arkitektur og Billedkunst forskningsdag for ansatte, studenter og andre interesserte. Dette var den første i rekken av noe vi ser for oss skal bli et fast innslag hvert semester.
Det er flere mål med å arrangere en forskningsdag: For det første er det en måte å synliggjøre mangfoldet i spørsmål, innfallsvinkler, mål og metoder innenfor forskning, arkitektonisk og kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid som foregår ved fakultetet i dag. For det andre vil slike arrangementer være arenaer for dialog og diskusjon om hvordan vi skal utvikle denne delen av vår virksomhet videre. Hva slags forskning trenger vi? Hvordan forsker arkitekter og kunstnere? Hva er det som driver dem? Og hvordan kan forskningen drive praksis framover?
Den første forskningsdagen startet med at Pia Bille fra Arkitektskolen i Århus tegnet et bilde av hva arkitekturforskning kan være, basert på mange års erfaring som redaktør for tidsskriftet Nordisk Arkitekturforskning. Pias innlegg finner du her.
Deretter hadde vi en serie med innlegg fra ansatte ved fakultetet som presenterte ulike perspektiver synspunkter på forskning, utvikling, og et godt forskningsmiljø. Presentasjonene kan lastes ned her: Pia Bille
